Hey there everyone… the aspiring Healthy Heart Guy – that would be me – is back after a week away from the blog! The last article I published was exactly a week ago on New Year’s Eve. I figured after 33 straight days of article writing, a little break was well-deserved. Even though I didn’t physically go anywhere, some vacation time from the daily routine is always a good thing.
From a technical standpoint, however, taking a week off wasn’t the best thing I could have done. You see, search engines like Google prefer you post (or publish) content to your blog on a regular, consistent schedule… maybe not every day, but at least a few times a week. This helps your blog’s search engine ranking – where you rank in the results when someone searches for the topic you blog about.
Now a week is not a very lengthy period of time to go without posting, but a better way would have been for me to stockpile some articles and then schedule them to be automatically published on the blog during my absence.
Moving forward, I’ll probably create some extra content for those times when I’m away… kind of like those extra lessons and movies that a teacher keeps on hand for the substitute…
Another reason to publish content regularly is so your blog doesn’t appear to have been abandoned. If I come across a blog and the author has not posted anything new in a month or two, I usually don’t stick around or come back.
A blog should be like a diary or a journal or even like a sitcom… it should have fresh, regularly updated content that tells an ongoing story or has a continuous theme. It should encourage visitors, as Gilligan’s Island did, to “Join us here each week my friends…”
OK, since I’m a big technology geek, I just wanted to let you know a little about how blogs work… in case you ever think of starting one yourself.
Even though I haven’t written anything for the past week, I have thought a lot about what direction I’m heading with the Healthy Heart Guy blog. From the beginning, I’ve wanted to bring you valuable tips and information about heart health – from recipes to CPR techniques to how to dine out and still eat healthy.
But the main reason I started this blog was to do some storytelling… my initial story of surviving sudden cardiac arrest on that subway train and also the ongoing, episodic story of how that event has motivated me to try and make certain changes so I can become heart healthy and not die prematurely.
What would help me though, is to get input from you folks… the people who have been actually reading this blog. That’s why I recently changed the blog’s settings to make it easier for you to leave comments under each post (or article).
So please take a moment and leave a comment below this article. Give me your suggestions for future content… tell me what you honestly think… and feel free to comment on the other articles as well. I only ask that your comments are relevant to the article’s topic; that keeps us all on the same page.
PLEASE NOTE: To avoid something called “comment spam”, your first comment will not automatically appear; I have to manually add it underneath the article. After that, your comments will immediately appear.
Thanks in advance and I hope your 2010 is getting off to a great start!
